This week I finally began work on my project. I started off by drawing the scene onto the canvas, making sure to be aware of negative space. Then, I went in with some color blocking. It is really hard to figure out which color to block, since each section is made up of so many different highlights, hues, and shadows.

This week, after my visit to New Orleans, I found these really beautiful old oak trees and decided that they would be my next subject. They have a clear light source and have lots of leaves and fern coverings, which should be especially well expressed in terms of broken color. One exciting aspect of this subject is that there is a bridge in the middle ground, so I will finally get to paint some of the built environment. Additionally the ripple effect in the stream will look really interesting expressed in broken color. My plan is to transpose the tree from the right picture and use that lighting, while including the water and bridge from the right picture.
This week, since I have not yet decided which landscape to paint, I am working on my independent project and my planning page for this project instead. I have decided to make a slightly larger broken color painting. I aim to include a wider range of hues in my next piece (looking toward Monet for inspiration) and choose a landscape with a more defined light source.
